Cooking With Kids ~ Apple Pie

Saturday, April 30, 2011

Hello and welcome to another round of
Cooking With Kids!
Where this momma uses the culinary abilities of her own children to test out recipes for her Preschool Mini Chefs Program.
On the menu this week?

Apple Pie!

First Cameron {guinea pig #1} helped to mix up ingredients for our pie crust.
We used my grandmas recipe.

"It's got raw egg Mommy?'
"Yeah, that's why you're not supposed to eat it until it's cooked."
"Don't worry Mommy, it still tastes good."
Note to self ~ have dough already prepared for my Mini Chefs.

Our dough all ready to go.

We used homemade Apple Sauce for our filling.

Cameron loved filling the tart shells.

And watching our Apple Pies baking in the oven.

But I think that he liked eating them the best!

Where is guinea pig #2 you ask?
He wasn't interested in participating today.
Didn't even want to try a warm Apple Pie!

All in all a very successful Cooking With Kids.  I can't wait to make these with my Preschool Mini Chefs!
Thanks for swinging by!

Soccer T-shirt Tutorial

Friday, April 29, 2011

I'm officially a Soccer Mom.
The boys started Kick 'N Run soccer this week.
And let me tell you ~ it's cAute!

All those little three year olds picking the ball up with their hands and running with it or scoring on their own net... freaking adorable!
I used to coach soccer back in the day and it definitely wasn't as fun as having your own kids play.

So here's the tute on how to create your own Soccer T-shirts:
 1. Sketch out a design.
2. Cut out font with a Cricut or Silhouette.
3. Lay out design on t-shirt.
4. Cut letters out onto Freezer Paper.
5. Iron on Freezer Paper stencil and paint.
6. Add details like a reverse appliqued '07'
7. Or Freezer Paper stenciled soccer ball.

Finish the project off with a fun photo shoot.

Please let me know if you would like more details.

Necklace Holder

Hey guys!  I have a super cute, fast project for you.
Ever since Mandy over at Sugar Bee Crafts posted her April Fools Shabby Chic Necklace Holder {aka a board with nails in it} I have been looking for necklace holder materials.
It took me 21 days to find this:

Isn't it great?!?!!?  It even has dragonflies
I found it at Homesense in the outdoor decor section.
Needs a bit more pop though...

So I gave it a quick turquoise makeover with a dry brush and some varnish.

Here's where my necklaces used to hang out.

Now they have a new, fabulous home!

Stay tuned for more {top secret} bathroom updates.

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Okay so this is not me.
While some days I may wish I had long brown hair, I do not.
This is however, how excited I would look if I were holding a giant sign announcing that I was Guest Posting at I Am Momma Hear Me Roar.

I freaking love Cheri at I Am Momma.  She is like my bloggin' Beiber.
If I ever have the opportunity to meet Cheri in person, I'm going to jump up and down screaming and ask her to sign all of my Freezer Paper Stenciled T-shirts.

Okay.  Was that weird?

Anyway you should go check me out... over there.  I'm sharing the whole Pirate Ship Room shebang!

Family Art Gallery

Monday, April 25, 2011

Hi everyone!
Whew.  Has your Easter Weekend been as fun and crazy as ours?
I hope so!
In honour of spending time with the family I give you our
Family Art Gallery...

I have been blessed with a creative gene that runs deep in our family.  This is one of the displays of artwork in our den.  The three watercolour paintings are my moms and the sculpted flower is mine.

Here's a close up of my pseudo Calla Lily.

My moms tulip.

This picture was done by my sister in pencil crayon and watercolours.  It's down the hall from the others {you can see them in the reflection on the right}.  She was inspired from a {creepy} video game.
We're gamers... so it's cool.

Here's another of my pieces.  It's four canvases {I took separate photos and put them back together in Picnik because they are completely and utterly crooked on the wall in the den}.  My inspiration was the inside of a Tiger Lily.

Remarkably the colour scheme fell together on it's own.  My grandmother is the real artist who has gifted us with her talent.  While I have a lot of her pottery around the house ~ none of her paintings are hung yet!  I will save those for another day.

I need to pull out the paints more often.  Thanks for reading.
I appreciate each and every comment!

Happy Easter!

Sunday, April 24, 2011

I hope that you are having a Wonderful Weekend with friends and family!
The boys and I dyed Easter Eggs yesterday with natural food colouring.
It was pretty neat!
The recipes are from Real Simple.
Cameron has been telling me all week that the Easter Rabbit is going to bring him a Cars Easter basket with lots of stuff inside.  I just said "Oh really?"  He sounded pretty sure of himself.  I finally realized the other day {while organizing} that I had left his {brand new} Easter basket out in the open.  Sure enough he's been walking by a Cars Easter basket  full of stuff for days.  Bad mommy!  So I re-hid it.  When Cameron asked for his Cars Easter basket again, I said that we'd just have to see what the Rabbit would bring! Doh!

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a great day.

Guest Room Revamp

Friday, April 22, 2011

We have a room in the house that was starting to resemble one from the show Hoarders.  No dead cats or chickens {I swear} but lots of stuff, piled onto more stuff.

When we bought this house we didn't realize how little storage it has.  Kid and craft stuff is crammed everywhere.  And we're pretty good about purging once a season.  While on our last mission to organize we decided to makeover our guest room.
Darcy started by filling all of the holes in the walls.  Our basement had the chicken pox for a week.  We painted and got 80% of the way done before realizing we were out of paint and would have to go out the next day and buy another gallon.

Now we have a tranquil, decluttered space for guests to stay.  I purchased new bedding, a fabulous throw pillow and a little green vase to tie the room together.  Tip:  our window is off centre in the room so we made sure to centre the curtains to provide symmetry.

Thanks for visiting!
On to the next project...

Home Alone

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

No, not the movie.
Although it's a classic!

The course.  That I teach.
Home Alone is one of the most popular courses that I instruct.  Having our children stay home alone is often at the top of our 'worry lists' as our kids grow older.  I have been having a blast teaching Home Alone for nearly ten years.

After sharing and posting all of the fun Preschool Activities that I have been doing I thought that I'd share this one too.  I hope that you find it useful.

When I mention my Home Alone Program to parents/friends/family I am often bombarded with questions.
Here are a few...

Question ~  How old does my child legally have to be to stay home alone?
Answer {here in BC} ~ There is no legal age.  The Ministry for Children and Families recommends that a child be 9 years old.  What might this look like?  A five minute trip to the corner store.

Question ~ How old does my child have to be to babysit?
Answer {here in BC} ~ The recommended age to babysit siblings is 11 years old.

Question ~ How often should I check my smoke detector?
Answer ~ Once a month.

Question ~ Do I need to have a First Aid kit in my home?
Answer ~ No, some first aid supplies are adequate.  However it is a good idea.

Some of the topics that we cover include...

Emergency and Non Emergency Scenarios
Stranger Danger
Etiquette When Answering the Phone or Door
Afterschool Activity Planning
Snack Planning and Preparation
Basic Babysitting
Basic First Aid Skills and Scenarios
Fire Safety

You can usually find a similar Home Alone course through your local Recreation Organization {I have instructed for the YMCA and City of Kelowna ~ you can find my current course here.}

What I really want to emphasise though, that which is the most important component to any Home Alone Program, is communication between parent and child.  Truthfully you can teach and review all of these topics yourself with your child.  It is important that you are on the same page.  Is your child allowed to use the stove while home alone?  Are they allowed to have friends over?  Are they allowed to answer the door if it's a stranger?  Where {what one spot} do you meet at in case of a fire?  Discuss basic expectations and rules with your child.

Just reviewing these topics and role playing a few scenarios will help to make you and your child feel more confident.

There are some great resources on the Internet too...

About ~ Home Alone Strategies for Teens.
Study Point ~ Academic Support and Tutoring
Teacher Created ~ Great Worksheets

I would love to hear from you!  Do you have any Home Alone strategies or stories to share?  Please leave a comment.

Easter Bunny Artwork

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Good day!
I found the cutest idea somewhere on the internet {if it was you, please email me so I can share the love} where you have a line up of bunnies with the quote
"Will the real Easter bunny please wiggle?"

I thought that it would be a great project for my Easter Eggstravaganza Workshop {with 6-10 year olds}.
Here's how it turned out:

I created an example to inspire the children.  Here it is on my buffet.

I cut out bunnies for the children to trace.  I used the big buddie system, where older students could help younger ones cut out their bunnies.

Each participant cut out five bunnies, glued them onto a background piece of card stock and embellished with tails, flowers and our quote.

A line up of a few of the finished projects.  Cute eh?

Thanks for stopping in.  Have a fabulous day!

Skor Cake

Monday, April 18, 2011

This cake should be introduced with the Star Wars theme song.
You know.
da da da duh da da duh da da
de de de deh de de deh de de
Okay so it's difficult to type a theme song.
But you get it ~ this recipe is Epic.
Scroll down to the bottom and click on the video.  Scroll back up and read while listening.  Good hey?!

Like Han Solo battling Storm Troopers.... To. Die For.
Alright enough with the Star Wars analogies.  Here are the goods:

1 pkg Chocolate Cake Mix {prepared and baked in two 8" rounds}
1 litre Whipping Cream
1/3 cup Cocoa
3/4 cup White Sugar
4 Skor Bars all crushed up
The recipe is from my sister-in-law via my mother-in-law {I have fab in-laws, I know!}

Allow your two cake rounds to cool before cutting them each in half.

Mix whipping cream, sugar and cocoa.  Whip ingredients until they are well incorporated.  Do not over whip ~ we don't want to butter our cake.

Fold in crushed Skor bars {reserve 1/2 bar}.

Now build your cake of epic proportions.  Layer the cake with the whipping cream mixture.  Cover entire cake with whipping cream.  Sprinkle reserved Skor bar on top.  Try {and fail} not to lick the spoon, spatula, mixer and bowl.  Hum theme song.
da da da dah da da dah da da
du du du duh du du duh du du

Take a step back to admire your masterpiece.
Is this how Darth Vader felt after finally completing the Death Star?

Now, now, no licking the computer screen.  You'll just have to go and make your own!

A five ingredient cake that looks this good?  Priceless!

Now back to our theme song:

Who me?  A lone woman surrounded by a house full of boys?
How'd you know?

Thanks for visiting. Enjoy!
