Truly "Beautiful British Columbia"

Friday, July 29, 2011

You may have noticed that I haven't been doing a lot of sewing, crafting or even baking.  What I have been doing is exploring this great province called British Columbia.  And becoming more and more inspired by it's natural beauty.

Last weekend we camped at Wells Grey Provincial Park.
Our license plate is tagged with 'beautiful British Columbia'.  Here is some proof:

It's even better in person.

We crossed this old, one-way bridge to get to the next falls...

Also called 'Mini Niagra'
This viewpoint is right at the top of the falls.

Glad that I am not scared of heights for this one.

It was cool to see remnants of all of the volcanic activity that occurred over 7000 years ago.

Gorgeous hey?!?!

We're headed out again this weekend.  Taking the kids to "Noah's Ark" ~ it should be a blast!

Thanks for stopping by.

Raspberry Rhubarb Crisp

Hi friends!  So glad that you could stop by.
We took the kids raspberry picking the other day.
It was awesome!!!
We got an entire icecream bucket full of raspberries for $6
AND the boys had a blast!
Cameron "is this one ready Mom?"

So anyway I couldn't let all of these raspberries go to waste so I threw together a Raspberry Rhubarb Crisp.
In a 9x13 pan I tossed 3c of raspberries with 1/2c of sugar.
Then I added 4c of diced rhubarb and 1/4c flour.
I mixed 2c of flour, 1c of brown sugar and 1/2c margarine to create a topping.
Here is the topping all incorporated.  I spread this out over top of my fruit and baked at 350 for 30 minutes or until golden and bubbly.
Yummers right?!?!
I still have some leftover if you want to stop by for tea!

Have a fabulous weekend!
Thanks for reading.

Gardening 101 ~ An update

Monday, July 18, 2011

Hey there!
Welcome to Gardening 101 ~
where I share my bumbling about the garden with you,
my lovely readers!

And so an update...

I've been harvesting a few things {we've really had a late start to the season here}.
Raspberries and rhubarb.

The beans are starting to really shoot up.

I have a TON of tomatoes on the vine.
Salsa canning here we come!
Now seriously if you plant just one thing, it's got to be mint.
The smell is lovely.
My carrots {puny I know}.

The peppers that I finally bought from the Greenery and planted are doing well.
Here's a little perennial {I'll have to ask Mom what it is} that I bought and have yet to plant.
My Peonies got this ugly mildew all over the leaves this year.  They were probably drowned out by my Bleeding Heart plants being too close and taking over the area.  I'll have to do some transplanting this fall.  I pruned them all back for the summer.
And another shot of my front entrance.  I love this {um, it's on the tip of my tongue} viney thing that crawls up the brick and column.

Anyway that's all for now.
I've got to do some fertilizing and hope that things will grow and ripen before September!

Thanks for stopping by.

While we were camping...

Sunday, July 17, 2011

We headed to Old Cowboy Ranch last weekend.
Oh my gosh did we ever have a blast!
The kids keep asking 'when are we going camping again?' and I can't book time off fast enough!

Old Cowboy Ranch is literally an old ranch with over 100 friendly peacocks, horses, cows, pigs, chickens and goats.  I love it because it combines riverside camping with ranch life.

The kids love all of the animals ~ here's Cameron with a goat.

And Isaiah being chased by a kitten {how cute is that?!!?}

It's all very rustic ~ here are the boys in the solar shower.

And getting all muddy again soon after.

We had plenty of hotdogs and smores by the fire ~ here's Isaiah's typical "NO Pictures" pose.

We're headed to Noah's Ark Resort next weekend.
I can't wait!

Do you have any favorite camping spots, tips or recipes?
Please share!

How I Style My Short Hair...

Friday, July 15, 2011

Hi y'all!

I had a ton of fun following hair week over at IAMHMR last week.  So I thought that I'd share a few things that I do with my uber straight, short {could you grow faster... I mean really, cummon!} hair.

And as I am still playing around with the new camera I have all sorts of oddly angled pictures.  So here we go...

Hi.  My name is Heather and I'm a change-my-hair-aholic.
What's a change-my-hair-aholic you ask?
Someone who is always experimenting with the dark side of hair products.
That is blondissma, hair relaxer, perms and pretty much any at-home treatment that I can wreck my hair with.
I don't have very much photographic evidence of said disasters {I usually run crying to the salon with a hat on} but my wallet sure is lighter after many trips to 'fix' my habit.
Anyway it's been a good hair month.
One step at a time.

Here's my do on Canada Day.
I simply braided my bangs back and to the side.

See?
That's salon quality highlights right there ~ nearly impossible to replicate at home {believe me I have tried!}

And here is a great shot of my messy kitchen.  I mean my mom-on-the-go updo.  This is second day {unwashed} hair.  I backcomb and blow dry to get a little volume then I grab two little hand fulls in the back and create minuscule pigtails.

I pinned back my bangs with a cute little bobby pin you can find in my shop.

Okay now you just have to try this app if you have an iPhone...
especially if you are interested in capturing your bad habit hair days, mommas-got-no-time-for-makeup days and since when did Mt St. Helens grow on my face days.
Sounds like fun right!?!?!
Ha ha.

Thanks for stopping by.
You're the best!

Best Ever Potato Salad

Sunday, July 10, 2011

When Darcy and I were first dating his mom and I got to talking about how we each had an amazing Potato Salad recipe.  We started comparing ingredients and found out that we had the SAME Potato Salad recipe ~ right down to the secret ingredient!  Here is our Best Ever recipe:

The Goods:
12 hard boiled eggs
20 medium potatoes
1/4 cup chopped chives
4 diced pickles
1 t. seasoning salt
2 T. relish
1 1/2 cups of mayonaisse
1-3 T. pickle juice {the secret ingredient}
1-2 T. mustard

Hard boil eggs {cook in boiling water for at least 10 mins}.

Chop eggs into bite size pieces.

Peel and boil potatoes {I like to over cook them slightly}.  Then chop into bite size pieces.

Pick chives fresh from the garden {green onion would be fine too}.

Finely chop the chives.

Dice the pickles.

Combine egg, potato, chives and pickles.

Add remaining ingredients.  Mix well.

Perfect for a summer picnic or backyard BBQ.

Enjoy!
