Can It.

Monday, August 29, 2011

Next time the kids are fighting I'm going to hand them a Mason Jar and tell them to can it!!
Hmmm they might look at me like I'm crazy but it should buy me a minute of peace. LOL

I've been keeping my ears open for when peaches would be ready locally and where I could get my hands on some.

One of my girlfriends posted on FB that peaches were ready!  I had no idea where though and on a hunch drove past her house ~ sure enough it was her neighbor who was selling peaches.  Score!
So I bought 40 lbs {is that a lot?}

I haven't started any canning yet ~ it's been a crazy summer ~ but I have a bunch of cute labels {found in the Michaels clearance section} that I can't wait to use.

If you are all geared up for canning season, here are a bunch of my recipes from last year:

Gardening 101 ~ Watering is not my thing...

Saturday, August 27, 2011

really.  On next years To Do list?  Underground sprinklers for sure!  But here is our valiant effort to keep the garden alive this summer {with help from some underage water boys}.
Some kind of hot pepper {salsa here we come}.

Our little peas.

The single bean stalk.

A visitor on the mint.

Lots and lots of tomatoes!

Lots and lots of cherry tomatoes!!
Remind me to actually look at the plant tags next year ~ we had not a single regular sized tomato in the bunch!

Stay tuned for more harvesting fun soon.

Butterfly Print Painting

Thursday, August 25, 2011

This was my submission for Season 9 of SYTYC.  And I made it through auditions!!!  Did you know that it was me?

What?  A girl project!?

Well I have some fun news!
Have I mentioned that Darcy and I are Foster Parents?
We've been house parents to young men and women for quite some time, long before we had our own kids.  We love it ~ it's very rewarding work!

Recently we decided to welcome younger children into our home.    In June we had a little girl, 7 years old, placed with us.  She is energetic, funny and a true pleasure to be around!  While we are not sure how long she will be with us, we have made the most of every opportunity to make her feel warm, welcome and cared for.

And so {for a while at least} you will see more girly projects from around our previously boy filled house.  YAY!
Without further ado I give you:

a Butterfly Print Painting

I created this painting to add some much needed color to a
special little girls room.
We personalized it by using her very own hand and foot prints!
Can you see them?

I painted her hands and feet and used the prints for the butterfly wings.  Then I painted coordinating frames around them and added details in black and white.

Can you spot her cute little toes?
I wrapped the images right around the sides of the painting.

This favorite t-shirt of hers was our inspiration.

I love that this is not only a personalized project for her room but also that it is something that she can take with her on her journey of life.

Thank you so much for reading!

My Memories Suite GIVEAWAY

Monday, August 22, 2011

***Now Closed***
Oh my gosh!!!
I am so excited to share this with you all.  I was recently given the opportunity to review My Memories Suite digital scrapbooking software.  Can you believe that I have never experimented in digital scrapbooking programs?  Me?  The so-called "scrap-a-holic"?!  So when My Memories asked me to review and give away their product I was thrilled!!!

First off, I have a confession.  I am about 2 years behind in my traditional scrapbooking.  I just don't have the time to complete layouts anymore.  It kind of feels like having a homework assignment that's been due for the past two years and I'm the tardy student.  Yikes.
Now on to my review:

1.  Design.  Here is one of my finished pages.
I love the result ~ simple, vibrant and colorful!

2.  Easy.  Really My Memory Suite was super easy to download and use.  I am not the most computer savvy person {my desktop and I have a love/hate relationship} so I was concerned that the whole process would be time consuming and frustrating.  I was relieved to find that it was actually a breeze!  In a single evening I had downloaded the digital scrapbooking software, some of my favorite digital paper packs and completed my first layout!

3.  Time.  I never have enough of it.  I often joke about cloning myself!  I love, love, love that My Memories Suite allows me to enjoy one of my favorite hobbies in a fraction of the time it takes to complete a traditional scrapbook page.

Since the biggest payoff for me was saving valuable time, I challenged myself to put together an album in one hour!!
One Hour!
Here's what I came up with:

Awesome right?!!?

So how can you get your own My Memories digital scrapbooking software kit {a $40 value}??

1. You can enter to win right here!!  Just go to My Memories, choose your favorite digital paper pack and share your pick here in the comment section {one entry}.
2.  Visit My Memories on Facebook, like their page and comment that you did here {one entry}.
3.  OR {if you can't wait to win} go to My Memories and download your very own digital scrapbooking kit using coupon code {STMMMS49705} for a $20 discount {$10 on software and $10 on a giant selection of embellishments}!

The winner will be announced Thursday, September 1st.

Good Luck!!

Wrap It Up

Saturday, August 20, 2011

Am I the only one starting to look forward to back-to-school?
Here we've got two more weeks of summer vaca...
but truly I can't wait to get back into a routine and welcome Fall {i love fall ~ are you with me?}
Anyway with school lunches in mind I give you...

the ham and cheese wrap.
We took these to the water slides last week and I don't know if it was the extra exertion of hiking up to the slides or everyone was just ravenous but they were gone in seconds!

I used; sun dried tomato tortillas, deli style ham, cheddar cheese, lettuce, mustard, mayo and honey.

I start with my condiments.

Then I layer my other ingredients to one side slightly.

When I start to roll my wrap, I continuously tuck my ingredients into the tortilla.

Sliced in half and good to go!

And for your viewing pleasure a completely geeky Vlog of me demonstrating how to Wrap It Up.
Sorry that it's so blurry!

Reunion Scavenger Hunt

Monday, August 15, 2011

Hey guys!!
Just back from an awesome Family Reunion!

I wanted to share with you one of the activities that I planned for the children.
This Reunion Scavenger Hunt was a great way to renew old friendships and acted as an icebreaker for the multitude of cousins that we had at our event.

Under the 'where' section I pasted photos from around our event and children had to write the location of each photo underneath.  Click on 'Reunion Scavenger Hunt' above for a download of the full document.  This would also be a great activity while camping or working with a group of children.

Because we had children of varying ages, I appointed the oldest as the leader.  We had three groups that each had {for example} a 9 year old, a 7 year old, a 5 year old and a 3 year old as well as a teenage/adult helper.  Be sure to delegate helpers to each group {I didn't and we had some groups that struggled with the little ones}.

Here's a Scavenger Hunt I did for Easter.  I have also coordinated Scavenger Hunts for the 24 Hr Relay and groups of children in Daycare settings.  Really the skies the limit!

Enjoy and HAVE FUN!

Barbecue Steak

Friday, August 12, 2011

Hi guys!
I have one last camping meal for you.
Steak on the BBQ.

Lick your computer screen yummy!

I prepared my steaks before camping and let them rest in a marinade.

Then I grilled them on our camping stove top.

We added local corn from the farmers market {Cameron had already taken a bite or two out of the top one}.

Finished off with a broccoli coleslaw and sauted mushrooms.

And thanks for visiting.

Grilled Cheese

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

One of the kids' favorite meals is Grilled Cheese sandwiches.
So this summer I thought, lets not deprive ourselves while camping.

They turned out awesome and of course everything tastes better in the great outdoors!
I caved and bought white bread just for the occasion {usually it's whole wheat for us}.
And fried them on the griddle.
The kids were thrilled to have this favorite while camping ~ although they did ask
"Mommy where's the mato {tomato} soup?".
Room for improvement next year I guess. :P
