Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to create some fun
Secret Sweetheart Cookies
How great is it to open something up and find a surprise inside?!!
These cookies combine the old school goodness of my great-grandmas sugar cookie recipe
and the idea of a pinata cookie.
They turned out absolutely adorable and the boys can't wait to give them to their preschool class mates.
I used this *best sugar cookie recipe ever* and my cheater royal icing recipe {found below}.
I was inspired by these halloween trick-or-treat cookies and these classic Valentine's sugar cookies. Yum!
After mixing the cookie dough, I cut out 40 solid hearts and 20 hearts with smaller hearts cut out of the middle. After baking I had enough hearts to make 20 cookies ~ two solid hearts and one cut out heart for each cookie.
I used a mixture of icing sugar and water to "glue" the heart cut out cookie to the top of a solid heart cookie.
I found these great heart-shaped candies {like jelly beans} at Michaels and picked up heart-shaped sprinkles at our local grocery store.
It was hard not to eat all of these as I was putting cookies together ~ so good! ;)
Each cookie contained one jelly heart and sprinkles. Then I "glued" another solid heart cookie to the top of the cookie sandwich. Finally I iced the cookies using this flooding technique. Rather than making royal icing I use a mixture of icing sugar {powdered sugar} and water. I mix the sugar and water with my desired food colouring until I get the consistency that I need for the cookies. A little thicker for the outline and thinner for the flooded centre.
Love, love, love them!

Clever!
