3 Salt Dough Valentines

As you may know, I am teaching a class called "Pinspired Projects", where we create projects using our favorite pins.  To say that I am excited about this course is an understatement!

During our second class {week two} we created Salt Dough Ornaments.  We used this pin and this pin as our inspiration.

The boys and I made these Salt Dough Valentine's as examples for class ~ they turned out super cute!

And after experimenting with a few different recipes and methods of creating salt dough ornaments I have some tips.  The recipe that worked the best for us was...

1 cup flour

1/2 cup salt

1/2 cup water

We used regular old table salt, white flour and slightly warm water.  The dough combined easily using a variety of methods; kitchen aid mixer, bowl with fork and kneading in a Ziploc bag all worked.  We then rolled the dough flat using a rolling pin, to about 1/8 of an inch in thickness.  Then we stamped the dough, if desired, with rubber stamps and cut out fun shapes using cookie cutters.  Be sure to stamp the dough before cutting it, otherwise stamping can distort the shape that you have cut out.

Because I am not the most patient person and we didn't have much time for baking in class, we baked the shapes for 30 minutes at 300° using the convection setting on the oven.  

I found that cooking the dough quickly worked best in a convection oven.  We tried cooking them in class without convection and the salt dough tended to puff up and brown.  If you don't have a convection oven, cook for 3-4 hours at 200° or air dry for at least 24 hours.

 The boys helped to test out the salt dough ornaments and painted valentine hearts for grandma and teacher.

  

From start to finish this is a great craft to do with kids.

We used acrylic paint, varathane sealer and a bit of hemp to finish off our Salt Dough Valentines.

There are so many fun things, for all occasions that you could make with salt dough.

Truly, the possibilities are endless!
