How to Make Easy Apple Cinnamon Ornaments

Easy Apple Cinnamon Ornaments

These apple cinnamon ornaments are super easy to make and enjoy.  You’ll want to add this simple project to your Christmas crafting this year!

If there is one craft or project that I have fallen in love with this season, it is THIS one. I can’t wait to teach you how to make these easy apple cinnamon ornaments!

My aunt used to make these ornaments with my cousins when they were little so I knew that I had to give them a try with our kids!  Be sure to check out these Chewbacca cinnamon ornaments and Yoda cinnamon ornaments that we made last year too.

These homemade ornaments are very easy to make this holiday season.  They make the whole house smell divine and look gorgeous attached to just about anything!

How to make cinnamon applesauce ornaments:

Supplies:

One batch of dough makes approximately fifty small ornaments. It takes about thirty minutes to create and decorate the ornaments, minus the time to cook the dough.

Directions:

1. Slowly add the cups of cinnamon to the applesauce until the mixture resembles play dough or sugar cookie dough.  You want to create a smooth ball of dough.

2. Use cinnamon like you would flour when rolling out cookie dough.  Dust your work surface and rolling pin with cinnamon.

Tip: you can layer the dough between two pieces of parchment paper or sheets of plastic wrap to help prevent the dough from sticking.

3. Roll out the apple cinnamon dough into about 1/4 inch thickness.  Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and the wooden skewer to poke a small hole into the top of the ornament.

4. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and bake in a 200° oven for 1.5 hours. Move to a wire rack to cool.

5. Once cooled to room temperature, remove the applesauce ornaments from the cookie sheet and tie with bakers twine for hanging from the top of each ornament.

Cinnamon ornament tips:

  • Look for cinnamon in the dollar store or bulk section of the grocery store
  • Use small 1.5 inch cookie cutters for little ornaments that can be used to accent almost anything
  • To dry?  Add more applesauce
  • To wet?  Add more cinnamon
  • These do not rise or expand and be placed very close together on the cookie sheet
  • Use cheap apple sauce and cinnamon as no one will be eating these {we hope}

Here’s what our ornament making looked like…

Apple Cinnamon Ornaments

Isaiah always enjoys mixing it up in the kitchen.  We used our Kitchen Aid mixer on the lowest setting.

This handmade ornament craft has quickly become a fun tradition in our family!

Of course he had to test out how edible these could be (not so good ~ trust us!) We mixed it up, rolled it out and began cutting out shapes.

Isaiah said that cutting the angel, snowflake, star, candy cane and gingerbread shapes was his favorite part. The best part for me is that they make the entire house smell heavenly!

We poked a hole in each one, then threw them into the oven. The house smelled wonderful the entire day and one batch of dough made a TON of ornaments!

We are using this easy holiday craft as part of our Random Acts of Kindness advent calendar ~ the boys are giving these cinnamon dough ornaments to people they meet saying, “Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas!

We decorated our tree last night and we found my son’s star ornament JUST LIKE THIS that he did in preschool. That was 7 years ago…they hold up well :)

was thinking about these not too long ago and had no idea how they were made. I have a santa shaped one from long long ago from my girl scout days. Might have to do these with the nephews :) Thanks for sharing!

I’ve smelled these and they remind me so much of Christmas! Looks like an awesome memory in the making!

I’ve really been wanting to try these! I love the idea of giving them out as RAK- we’ve been hading out candy canes, but I’ll have to so some of these also :) You ROCK, as always :)

What a great idea.
Did these with my daycare kids, and the dough was so easy to work with, even for small hands.
Now the house has a cinnamon smell all over, wonder if I’ll ever get rid of the cinnamon dust in my nose ;)
