Camo Capri Tutorial

  IMG_6893

Camo capri pants are the perfect addition to our boys’ back to school wardrobe.
These are comfortable, stylish and quick to make!  Our guys have already requested a few more pairs.

I used a camoflage stretchy knit material that was really easy to work with.  The steps in creating these capris are very similar to those in our Upcycled Anywhere Shorts.  In fact you could even make these out of upcycled t-shirts too!
Let make some capri pants shall we?

Camo Capris (3)

1. Start by tracing a pair of shorts that currently fit your child to create a pattern.  You want to create a shape from the inseam of the shorts to the outer fold.  Add 1/4″ all the way around for seam allowences.  Add 4-6 inches to the length of your shorts to create a pattern for capri pants.  Using a washable fabric pencil, trace the pattern onto your material.

2. Cut out two piece of material from the pattern.  One will be the right leg and one will be the left.  If you are not using a knit material then be sure to serge all of your edges to prevent fraying,  Fold the bottom of each leg up about 1″ and iron.  Sew into place creating a hem for the pants.

3. Sew each leg together using 1/4″ seam allowance.

4. Now fold one leg so that the right side of the fabric is facing out.  Tuck that leg into the other leg so that the right sides of the fabric are facing and the inseam of the pants are lined up.

5. Sew the inseam of the pants together using a 1/4″ seam allowance.

6. Fold and iron the top of the pants down about 1 1/4″.  Sew this into place, creating a pocket for a 1″ elastic to go.  Be sure to leave a 1″ hole for the elastic to go into.

7. Using a safety pin, thread the elastic into the pocket.  For our size five pants I used about 22″ of elastic.

8. Sew the ends of the elastic together.

9. Sew the hole closed and attach a label if desired. I have begun to create my own labels with twill tape and permanent ink.  This way my kids know which is the front and back of their pants.

Now we have a pair of super cute, super comfy camo capris.
They are the perfect pants for fall and busy back to school boys.
