How to make a DIY Felt Campfire:

DIY Felt Campfire Tutorial and Pattern ~ One For The Boys

First you will need to print out our pattern.  Here is the free fire pattern 1 and 2, log pattern and marshmallow pattern.  Next cut out all of your pieces of felt using the pattern as a template.  You will need:  3 brown sheets of felt, 1 tan sheet of felt, 3 red sheets of felt, 2 orange sheets of felt, 2 yellow sheets of felt, 2 white sheets of felt, poly fil and two wooden dowels.  I used various scraps of grey felt and flannel (about 4″x4″) to create bean bag sized rocks around our fire too (pattern for the rocks not included).

How to create felt marshmallows:

1. Sew the short edges of the white large rectangle together.
2. Sew the long edges and the top of the small rectangle together.
3. Do this again for the two other rectangles.

4. Sew the solid circle to the end of one of the large tubes to create a cylinder.
5. Repeat for the second marshmallow.

Now let’s create a pocket for the wooden dowel to go into the marshmallow.
6. Sew the small tube into the center of a circle with a hole cut into it.  I stitched this part by hand.
7. Repeat for the second marshmallow.

It should look something like this.

8. Now sew the circle with the small tube attached to the base cylinder.
9. Right sides facing, leaving a small 1″ hole for inverting.
10. Repeat with the second marshmallow.

11. Invert the marshmallows and fill with stuffing.
12. Sew the little hole closed and insert the wooden dowels to complete the marshmallows.

Whew.  That’s the hardest part of the project all done.  Yay!

How to create a felt fire:

1. Start by layering the yellow, orange and red felt pieces from the pattern.
2. Sew one of each colour on top of each other.  Do this twice so that you have a fire front and back.

3. Sew the front and back together leaving the bottom open.

4.  Now sew the oval bottom to the edges of the fire.  Leave a 2″ hole for inverting.

5. Invert, fill the fire with stuffing and sew the hole closed.

How to create the felt logs:

1. Finally sew the three brown pieces of felt into tubes, sew the circular tan pieces to either end of each log {leave a 1.5″ hole for inverting}, invert, fill with stuffing and sew closed.

2. Add bean bag sized grey rocks if desired.

Just saw this in Facebook! My granddaughter loves to camp, so I see a birthday present in the near future!

Adorable! What boy or girl wouldn’t want to play with this?

How fun! This is such a great idea and so cute! Pinning!

I printed the pattern for the campfire, but I do not see where it tells you the size you cut the parts out to be. Is the photo of all the pieces to be used , to be cut out as the pattern for each piece??? Would like to make this soon. Awaiting your response.
Thanks,
Kathy

Thanks so much for such an awesomely cute idea! Just finished sewing mine up and have plans to make another set for a friend’s children. I’ve only been sewing for a couple months, so, this was a great simple practice project. It is going to go great with the teepee my son has. I can’t wait to finish stuffing everything tomorrow so I can let him play with it!

I am SOOOO making this. I looked on Land of Nod and their’s is super cute but also expensive! Yikes! My son plays pretend campfire everyday with nothing so he will flip out for this. Thank you for the easy tutorial :) Cant wait to share it with my readers!

This felt campfire is genius! What an awesome idea! Thank you so much for sharing! Love it! It was featured here: https://www.plushiepatterns.com/diy-felt-campfire-tutorial-pattern/

I am making my 4th campfire set now. I’ve made it for two of my grandsons already and they love it. I also made a felt S’More Kit with it that has graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars that are stored in a decorated plastic box. So cute! Thank you so much for the idea and pattern!

Thanks so much for this tutorial and pattern. My daughter-in-law asked if I could make a pretend camp fire similar to the one on Land of Nod, then I found your tute and pattern! I plan to give it a go, so will let you know…

Can you tell me the dimensions of the large marshmallow rectangle? My printer isn’t printing the entire pattern. Thanks!

I downloaded the patterns but do not see a pattern for the oval at the bottom of the fire. I only saw one page with the flames. Do you have a pattern for the bottom oval? Thanks for your help.

Hi Heather,
Forgive me, but I am confused. The logs say cut 10, but only cut 4 tan. Wouldn’t you double the tan to put on all the logs? Is there supposed to be 10 logs? Thanks, Donna

Never mind, I think I figured out the log part, but are the square x 10 and the oval x 10 the rocks and do you sew two together to make one rock? Why do you only make tan x 4 when you make 3 logs? Wouldn’t that mean x 6? Sorry to ask so many questions, I am just not understanding. Thank You so much! Donna

I tried making this and the fire did not come out this good with the template provided. The template is hand drawn and are not straight. The oval and the circles are not a good shape. I wish the template shapes were more accurate and straight. I wasted a lot of felt for nothing!

Thank you for this awesome little camp fire. I just made a set for my nephews and niece and it’s such a hit! You’re brilliant ?

I made this and it is so cute!
